The ensemble of front and rear buildings is situated at a sensitive urban transition, mediating between the dense Wilhelminian street block and a loose row housing development from the 1970s. This context shapes the overall disposition: the front building takes a semi-open form, while the rear building is compact and closed.
A key design decision is the circulation strategy of the front building: access is moved outward and spatially expanded. This creates additional usable interior space by reducing internal circulation and establishes a clearly defined transitional zone between public street and private areas. The sculpturally articulated external staircase serves as an urban punctuation, mediating building heights, sightlines, and scale along the historic block edge.
The rear building concentrates residential use in a calm, introverted volume. Together, both structures form a balanced sequence of courtyard formation and privacy, responding to neighbouring typologies without imitation. The design carefully negotiates building envelope constraints, balancing regulatory setback requirements, the surrounding grain, and the legitimate goal of maximising residential units. The result is an ensemble that integrates seamlessly into its urban context while providing functional and spatial clarity for residents.
