The new construction of a residential building was realized on the former grounds of the Berlin GDR water police. Fascinated by the morbid presence of the abandoned industrial site, it was decided to emphasize its condition through an architectural and artistic re-appropriation resulting in the creation of a designed ruin. To establish harmonious interaction with the Ruinengarten, it was necessary to elevate the residential building, thus providing a generous view of the water. To blend in with the surroundings, the lightweight concrete core running through the center of the building was constructed with industrial panel formwork. In contrast to the narrow, windowless core, the elevated living level opens outward on all sides, offering a view that gives the impression of water flowing underneath. A long cupboard unit creates two bedrooms, its rear side made of plastered clay panels to regulate the room climate. Opposite the core, a two-sided furniture piece proportions the large living space into two separate areas. The shape of the railing of the precast concrete staircase is modeled on the fall protection used during the shell construction phase. The rough-sawn wood, partly left with tree bark, originates from the trees that had to be felled for the construction of the building.
