The abandoned and dilapidated industrial building from the 1970s, used by the GDR border police, was transformed into a sculptural object called Ruinengarten in 2010 through an artistic re-appropriation. Years later, the question arises as to whether the sculptural brick walls should be left entirely to the process of erosion and gradually disappear completely, or whether the remains can become part of a new structure in a broader context. This proposal is based on the addition of a concrete structure that both protects the remaining walls and forms a tighter composition to create a clearly defined space suitable for different uses. The concrete additions follow a simplified geometry that calms the zigzag brick outline and recalls the original building’s load-bearing structure through a different materiality.
